Manufacturing for the CCUS Revolution

Manufacturing For Carbon Capture, Utilisation And Storage
"CCUS technology has the potential to capture up to 90% of the carbon produced by industrial facilities, power plants, refineries and oil rigs."

The Centre For Climate And Energy Solutions maintain that developing our carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) capabilities may be the only practical way to achieve decarbonisation in the industrial sector, and we’re inclined to agree.

CCUS technology has the potential to capture up to 90% of the carbon produced by industrial facilities, power plants, refineries and oil rigs. But efforts to cement the UK’s place as a global leader in the CCUS sector have been slow to get off the ground. This is partly because planning, designing and piloting carbon capture and storage is time consuming.

Built to Meet the Needs of Pioneering CCUS Projects

But it is also because the cost of developing, manufacturing and installing the necessary infrastructure can be prohibitively expensive. Glacier Energy aims to help tackle this problem by designing affordable heat exchangers and pressure vessels that are purpose-built to meet the needs of pioneering CCUS programmes around the globe.

Carbon Capture

Benefiting from over 120 years of hands-on pressure vessel, heat exchanger and structural fabrication manufacturing experience, we’re one of the few UK engineering companies capable of manufacturing the reliable, efficient and well-optimised equipment needed to make your CCUS project commercially viable.

At present, we’re working with track one clusters, HyNet North West and the East Coast as well as the reserve Acorn Cluster to develop economical ways of capturing and storing carbon from industrial facilities and power stations.

Taking a Collaborative Approach

Most engineering companies are capable of building to meet an exacting specification, but fall down when they’re asked to break new ground. We’ve always worked closely with our clients; investing the time and energy required to understand their requirements and design technology that actively improves the efficiency of project critical processes.

CCUS technology is still in its infancy, and most projects are navigating uncharted waters. There’s a very real need for active and engaged suppliers that will look for novel ways to solve emergent problems and design reactively – optimising for the realities of a rapidly-developing and increasingly innovative sector.

We think we fit this criteria. In fact, we’re certain of it. We excel at designing new pressure vessels, heat transfer and energy storage technologies from scratch; using decades of in-house experience to plan and manufacture best-in-class systems that are designed to maximise the efficiency of your processes.

Carbon Capture

We’re also adept at picking solutions that offer the best possible compromise between reliability, durability and performance and we’re one of a very small handful of UK engineering companies with the domain knowledge needed to manufacture complex vessels and heat exchangers using exotic metals like hastelloy, duplex steel or inconel.

We’re also one of a few UK-based manufacturers with the dedicated clean rooms needed to manufacture durable parts using non-ferrous metals. This can be the key to producing equipment capable of withstanding the energy-intensive processes and hostile environments typically encountered in most CCUS plants.

But it’s our problem solving capabilities that really set us apart. Our engineering teams have a proven track record for innovation, our reverse-engineering capabilities are second to none and we take great pride in our ability to design innovative and cost-effective solutions to complex engineering problems.

Manufacturing to Exacting Standards

As an experienced engineering company that’s been operating for over 120 years, we always manufacture to the most exacting industry standards, including ASME VIII Div I (U1) & Div II (U2), the UK’s PD5500 and the EU’s EN13445.
